Quantum computer calculates tens of thousands of ways in seconds

Kose, a cosmetics manufacturer, has developed a system that automatically generates cosmetic prescriptions. There are more than tens of thousands of possible combinations of raw materials for cosmetics, considering the compounding amount, etc., and quantum computers were used to narrow down the search area. When the system was applied to formulating a facial cleanser (cleansing oil), the formulation was completed in just a few seconds, about 900 times faster than a classical computer calculation.

In addition, in general prescriptions, people think about such combinations, but it is said that they were able to produce a combination with a high removal rate of keratotic plugs, which was not found by humans. In the future, the company plans to apply this system to other cosmetics such as lotions and foundations, and will use it to develop products that meet customer needs.

The company has built a system that combines a quantum computer and a conventional computer. First, a quantum computer narrows down the candidates by inputting data on raw materials for facial cleansers, constraints such as safety, and target quality (physical property values for dissolving keratotic plugs). At this point, it is possible to narrow down which ingredients should be blended in what percentage range, and then a conventional computer is used to specify the specific blending amount. In addition, in this system, we adopted the "quantum annealing method", which has strengths in combinatorial optimization problems among quantum computers.
