Health risks from stage pigments containing heavy metals

Stage pigments used by opera singers are known to contain high concentrations of heavy metals. The current study investigated whether frequent exposure to pigments through dermal contact or inadvertent ingestion causes occupational diseases. Specifically, we investigated the presence and amount of release of chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) from 40 types of stage pigments, and investigated the health risks associated with actual usage scenarios. evaluated.

As a result, the average intake of heavy metals from pigments ranged from 7.0% to 19.9% for oral intake and 1.1% to 2.2% for skin contact. Generation of reactive oxygen species by stage lighting was found to increase the intake of heavy metals through skin contact. Quantitative evaluation on 3D skin models has shown that skin contact of pigments can induce predictable skin damage and potentially other skin diseases. Researchers say there is a need for regulation on the heavy metal content of stage pigments because pigments have been identified as a health risk for opera singers.
