No Weight Loss in Fecal Microbial Transplants from Lean Donors

The current study was a double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter, randomized clinical trial in 41 obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery at two Finnish medical centers. FMTs from lean donors or patients themselves (autologous placebo) were implanted into the duodenum using a gastroscope. She underwent debulking surgery with laparoscopic Roux-en-Y technique or cuff gastrectomy 6 months after transplantation. Patients were followed for 18 months, and 34 had a final visit after 18 months.

As a result, the total weight loss rate at 6 months was 4.8% in the FMT group and 4.6% in the placebo group, with no difference between the groups. Overall weight loss at 18 months was 25.3% in the FMT group and 25.2% in the placebo group, again with no difference between groups.
