Kirin and FANCL Develop Refill Cosmetic Packaging from By-Products of Beer Ichiban Shibori

As part of its efforts to protect the environment, Kirin's Research Institute for Packaging Innovation is working with FANCL to use hemicellulose extracted from beer lees, a by-product of the production of Kirin Ichiban Shibori Draft Beer, as a domestic cosmetics industry. Announced the development of cosmetic packaging for the first time.

Refill packaging for cosmetics made from by-products from the manufacturing process of Ichiban Shibori By using plant-derived hemicellulose instead of using petroleum-derived raw materials, it reduces carbon dioxide emissions and helps prevent global warming.

In research with Business Innovation Partners, which conducts research, development and manufacturing of biomass plastics using hemicellulose as a raw material, we mixed cellulose with hemicellulose extracted from beer brewing lees of "Ichiban Shibori", and as a result, we developed a packaging material for refills. It is said that they found manufacturing conditions for making a sheet suitable for shaping.

Using this sheet to form a colorless and transparent packaging material is a technical hurdle, but by utilizing the knowledge of each company, we have succeeded in commercializing a plant-based cosmetic packaging material for refills made from beer lees.
