Shiseido Jointly Develops Cosmetic Ingredients Using Protein Fibers

Shiseido will collaborate on cosmetic raw materials with a view to use in products based on the biodegradable structural protein "Brewed Protein Fiber", which is made from plant-derived biomass and developed by Japanese bio-venture "Spiber". Developed. This is the first time that cosmetics containing Spiber ingredients have been sold.

This material will be blended into Shiseido's products as mascara fiber that produces supple and beautiful eyelashes while considering the environment, and the company will consider using it widely in product development in the future.

The Brewed Protein fiber, developed by Spiber using its own technology, is a structural protein fiber produced through a microbial fermentation process using plant-derived biomass such as sugarcane and corn-derived sugars as the main raw material, and its biodegradability has been confirmed. Until now, it has been widely used as a raw material for clothing, but this time, Shiseido has taken advantage of its strengths in material science and its high commitment to customer-oriented quality to jointly develop raw materials for cosmetics.

After repeated studies from various perspectives such as safety, stability, functionality, and comfort as a cosmetic raw material, we succeeded in blending it into mascara while maintaining the characteristics of Brewed Protein fibers. In December 2021, Spiber registered an INCI name that will enable the use of Brewed Protein materials such as fibers as cosmetic raw materials.

To realize its corporate mission of "BEAUTY INNOVATIONS FOR A BETTER WORLD," Shiseido is promoting business activities while showing respect for people, society, and the global environment, based on the concept of "manbutsu shisei," which is the origin of the company name. It's here.

In the R&D area, we also pursue the development of containers and packaging that considers sustainability while pursuing high functionality, the development of naturally derived and highly biodegradable raw materials, the development of upcycled raw materials that utilize waste parts, and the development of plants that are the source of raw materials. We are actively working on "recycling" manufacturing such as cultivation of

On the other hand, Spiber is a bio-venture established in 2007 based in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, which develops structural protein "Brewed Protein material". Using plant-derived sugars as raw materials, the company is engaged in the development and production of next-generation new materials using fermentation production technology using microorganisms.

In addition to starting production of Brewed Protein Polymer at the company's first mass production plant in Thailand, the company is building a new mass production system with its partner ADM in the United States. It says.
