Pumpkin extract is powerful as a cosmetic moisturizing agent

The moisturizing power of natural polysaccharides is often used as a cosmetic ingredient. In this study, we examined the effects of extracts of Oriental squash (Cucurbita moschata), which is a treasure trove of natural polysaccharides, and Western squash (C. maxima), which is the most sold and used in Japan, and their effects on skin hydration. Purified polysaccharides were extracted from squash and deproteinized by CaCl2 method.

As a result, the total polysaccharide content, swelling capacity, swelling index, solubility, viscosity, water absorption, and oil absorption were superior to conventional squash. In addition, Western squash exhibited higher antioxidant activity than Oriental squash as measured by the DPPH assay. Japanese squash was shown to be non-irritating to the skin in an evaluation by 15 Thai volunteers. At extract concentrations of 0.05-0.1%, a significant increase in moisturizing power was observed depending on the concentration. This result confirmed that it can be used safely and effectively as a moisturizing agent in cosmetics.
