Evaluating the Effectiveness of Toothpaste with Activated Charcoal

 Whitening is one of the popular treatments. Currently, there is great interest in activated carbon, a natural compound with abrasive effects as a whitening agent. The current study performed a systematic review of the available literature on the use of activated charcoal-based toothpastes for tooth whitening and evaluated the efficacy of activated charcoal and/or the safety of using charcoal-containing toothpastes. . A search of charcoal, charcoal, and activated charcoal identified 208 articles, of which 11 met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The risk of bias of the included literature was judged to be moderate to high.


As a result, different studies yielded mixed results when it came to whitening effects. In some studies, there was no significant difference between the treatments compared, and in some studies, activated charcoal was not the most effective. Regarding abrasive effect, most studies showed that toothpaste with activated charcoal had higher abrasive potential.
