Cosmetic eye exposure

 A retrospective analysis of eye exposures associated with cosmetics and personal care products found that the United States Poison Control Centers received 266,743 calls during the period, or 14,039 calls per year. Infants aged 6 years and younger accounted for 51.6% of exposure reports, compared with 19.5% and 28.9% for adults aged 6–19 years and 20 years and older, respectively. The product subcategories with the highest percentage of exposure were perfumes, colognes and aftershaves with the highest rate at 19.0%, followed by sunscreens and/or sunscreen products at 11.2%, nail polish at 9.5%, soaps at 6.3%, and creams and lotions. , was 5.8% of make-up.

Product subcategories associated with moderate or severe adverse events were acrylic nail adhesives 14.4%, other nail products 12.9%, and other hair care products excluding peroxides 10.9%, excluding peroxides. It was 8.9% for hair coloring agents and 7.5% for peroxides. There was a decrease in the annual frequency of exposure to cosmetic and personal care products over the period, suggesting that public health efforts are needed to prevent further ocular exposure to these products.
