Multifunctional cosmetic raw material Moistol has novel coronavirus inactivation effect

Showa Denko Co., Ltd. has confirmed that "Moistol" (inositol oligosaccharide), a multifunctional cosmetic raw material, has the effect of inactivating the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2).

Moistol is a product launched in October 2021 as a unique functional cosmetic raw material that can be expected to have high moisturizing, anti-pollution, and anti-aging effects. This product has a moisturizing effect that increases ceramide, an effect that suppresses inflammation caused by ultraviolet rays, and an anti-pollution effect that protects the skin from damage caused by air pollution such as PM2.5. It is a cosmetic raw material that is expected to have an anti-aging effect. We recently conducted a virus inactivation test using Moistol and confirmed that it has an inactivation effect on the new coronavirus. As a cosmetic raw material that can achieve both high skin care and anti-coronavirus effects, this product is expected to be used not only as basic cosmetics but also for cosmetics that are expected to have anti-coronavirus effects.

In the inactivation test conducted by our company, 1% Moistol® was added to the virus-containing liquid, and the virus infection rate was examined after standing for 1 hour. When conducting this test against the new coronavirus, it was confirmed that the addition of Moistol® suppressed the infection rate by 90% and had an inactivating effect. Details of this study can be found in the September 2022 issue of Monthly Fine Chemicals.

Moistol® is a new eco-friendly cosmetic raw material that does not use organic solvents in the manufacturing process. Our cosmetic ingredients business focuses on vitamin C derivatives that can be used in whitening medicated cosmetics, and vitamin E derivatives that are effective in preventing rough skin and reducing dark circles under the eyes. Going forward, we will strive to expand our business by expanding our product range and contribute to improving QOL (Quality of Life) through cosmetics.
