Kose adopts biomass plastic for cosmetic containers for the first time in the industry through a mass balance approach

Kose announced on September 1 that it will adopt biomass PP by mass balance approach handled by Itochu Plastics.

The adoption of biomass PP for cosmetic containers through a mass balance approach is the first of its kind in the Japanese cosmetics industry. First of all, it will be developed in the container of “Sekkisei Clear Wellness Overnight Cream” scheduled to be released on December 1, 2022.

The mass balance approach is the process of processing and distributing products from raw materials to products, when raw materials with certain characteristics (e.g. biomass-derived raw materials) are mixed with raw materials that do not (e.g. petroleum-derived raw materials). A method of assigning characteristics to a part of a product according to the input amount of raw materials with characteristics. For example, if 10% of biomass-derived materials are used as raw materials, 10% of the product is considered 100% biomass plastic.

In April 2020, the KOSÉ Group announced the KOSÉ Sustainability Plan, which summarizes its sustainability initiatives and targets for 2030. Efforts are being made to adopt low-impact plastic material containers and reduce CO2 emissions.

As part of this, part of the container for SEKKISEI CLEAR WELLNESS OVERNIGHT CREAM from SEKKISEI, the company's leading skin care brand and leader in promoting sustainability, will be biomass graded using the mass balance approach handled by Itochu Plastics. adopt. In the future, we plan to expand adoption to other products within the same brand.
