Kao Begins Operation of Grievance Mechanism

In September 2022, Kao started operating the Grievance Mechanism for small-scale palm plantations in Indonesia in collaboration with the NPO Caux Round Table Japan, which specializes in business and human rights.

Through the grievance mechanism, we accept complaints and inquiries from farms, and conduct "investigation," "response," "resolution," "follow-up," and "reporting."・We will work to resolve essential issues related to the environment, especially human rights on small-scale palm plantations.

From October 2020, the company, together with oil product manufacturing and sales company Apical Group and plantation company Asian Agri, will improve the productivity of small-scale palm plantations in Indonesia connected to Kao's supply chain and promote sustainable palm oil. We are implementing SMILE (Smallholder Inclusion for Better Livelihood & Empowerment program), a program that supports the acquisition of certification (RSPO certification).

This time, we will start the operation of the grievance mechanism targeting small palm farms supported by "SMILE". Starting with about 50 farms on Sumatra Island, the target farms will be gradually increased. In addition, the content of the inquiry and the results of the response will be published on the Kao website.

Under the Grievance Mechanism, when a small-scale palm farm accesses Kao's Grievance Mechanism reception desk from a smartphone and enters a complaint or inquiry, the CRT Japan Committee manages personal information on the system, including the content of the inquiry. Kao will respond to inquiries from small palm farms after ensuring the transparency of the response status.

Depending on the content, we will ask Apical Group Asian Agri to respond, and for serious issues related to human rights and the environment, we will discuss how to respond with the CRT Japan Committee and Apical Group Asian Agri. After that, we will confirm the improvement status of the small palm farms, follow up on the progress, and publish the details of the inquiries and the results of the responses on the Kao website once every six months.

In this way, we will solve the essential problems of small-scale palm farms, prevent problems from occurring, improve productivity, and improve the living environment.
