Eugenol derived from clove oil may have an anti-obesity effect

Eugenol, a major aromatic compound derived from clove oil, has recently attracted attention for its potential preventive effects on several chronic diseases. In the current study, 5-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet or a high-fat diet supplemented with eugenol (0.2%, w/w) for 13 weeks.

As a result, eugenol significantly decreased obesity-related indicators such as weight loss, inhibition of weight gain, adipocyte size, visceral fat weight, and fasting blood glucose. An increase in Firmicutes and a decrease in Desulfobacterota at the phylum level, and a decrease in Alistipes, Alloprevotella, and Bilophila at the level of Dubosiella, Blautia, and unclassified_f_Oscillospiraceae spp. It has been shown. In particular, the obesity-related index was positively correlated with the relative abundances of Bacteroides, unclassified_f_Lachnospiraceae, Colidextribacter, and Bilophila, and negatively correlated with the relative abundances of norank_f_Muribaculaceae and Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group. Furthermore, the protective effect of eugenol against obesity was accompanied by reprogramming of white adipose tissue. These findings demonstrate that eugenol prevents high-fat diet-induced adiposity and modulates gut microbiota abnormalities, indicating the potential of eugenol in obesity interventions as a functional dietary supplement, researchers said. said.
