Lotion with tretinoin for acne is preferred

Topical retinoids such as tretinoin are now widely used to treat acne, but the associated skin irritation and dryness can reduce adherence. Because of the potential for improved patient adherence with optimized dosage forms, the current study conducted a single-center, double-blind, split-face study comparing 0.05% tretinoin lotions and creams. We compared the tolerability of the two drugs according to skin irritation and appearance, and the subject's evaluation of the product and skin sensation of the two drugs by once-daily application for 2 weeks in 23 adult female acne patients.

Evaluated two weeks after the start of the study, there was a significant increase in erythema, scaling, and dryness, and a decrease in skin softness, smoothness, radiance, and brightness on the cream-applied side compared to the lotion-applied side. was taken. Many participants found lotions to be gentler, more comfortable, spreadable, more absorbent, non-greasy, and leave minimal residue on the skin compared to creams. Concordance scores for skin sensation (eg, soft, non-dry, less dull) were higher for lotions than for creams. Overall, about 70% of participants preferred lotions to creams.
