Importance of women's iodine intake

Iodine is required for thyroid hormone synthesis and fetal neurogenesis. This review explores knowledge and perceptions of iodine among women of childbearing age and health care professionals (HCPs) in the UK. We searched for articles using the search terms 'knowledge of iodine' and 'recognition of iodine'. Four studies using questionnaires and qualitative methods found poor knowledge of iodine among women of childbearing age in the UK. Women were insecure about their knowledge of dietary sources of iodine and were not consistently provided element-related information by HCPs during clinical care. Midwives are recognized as the primary provider of dietary information during pregnancy, and midwives themselves recognize the importance of their role in providing nutritional advice, but feel unprepared. I thought I didn't have the confidence to address my nutritional concerns. However, some improvement was seen with the inclusion of iodine in antenatal care guidelines.

Improving HCP knowledge and effectively communicating information to pregnant and planning women may help improve iodine status, a particular concern during pregnancy. was done.
