Differences in bone microstructure between vegetarians and omnivores shrink with resistance training

A study of the effects of resistance training on reduced bone mineral density and increased fracture risk in vegetarians investigated cancellous bone and cortical bone in 43 healthy vegans and 45 omnivores at the teaching hospital of the Medical University of Vienna. Bone microarchitecture compared in observational studies. The study was conducted for about 5 years. We also evaluated the relationship between nutrient intake and self-reported physical activity.

As a result, compared with the omnivorous group, changes in the structure of cancellous and cortical bone were observed in the vegan group. Vegans who did not report resistance training had worse bone microarchitecture than similarly untrained omnivores. Vegans and omnivores who reported resistance training had similar bone microarchitecture. In the vegan group, both with and without resistance training, we found a small correlation between nutritional intake and bone microarchitecture, but no definitive pattern.
