DIC Succeeds in the World's First Establishment of Large-Scale Indoor Cultivation Technology for Blue-Green Algae Aphanothece sacrum

DIC and GSM entered into a capital and business alliance in March 2021, and have been working to establish technology for the indoor mass cultivation of Aphanothece sacrum. By combining the results of research that GSⅯ has continued with the mass production technology that DIC has cultivated through the production of Spirulina, we have discovered the conditions for cultivating Suizenjinori in a controlled indoor environment, which had been considered difficult until now. We succeeded in establishing mass production technology. By culturing under optimal conditions without the influence of the external environment such as weather, it is also possible for Suizenjinori to efficiently secrete cherry blossoms. Based on these results, we will realize mass cultivation of Aphanothece sacrum and stable supply of Sacran®.

In the future, we aim to develop Sakuran globally as an original cosmetic raw material originating in Japan, and we will strive to realize cost reduction through further efficiency. In the future, we aim to build a system that can cultivate Suizenjinori on a scale of several tens of tons or more, and to expand its use in various fields such as textiles, medical and supplements.

In addition to these efforts, the two companies will share the knowledge and research results of culturing technology for Suizenjinori, conserve the Kogane River (Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture), where Suizenjinori is naturally grown and cultivated, and GSM in Mashiki Town, Kumamoto Prefecture. We will also actively promote initiatives that can be used to expand the outdoor aquaculture business that we are working on.

In order to contribute to the "Quality of Life (QOL)" society set forth in its long-term management plan, DIC Vision 2030, the DIC Group is expanding its use of functional materials obtained from algae through strengthening its bio-business in the healthcare field. We intend to provide valuable products to our customers in the fields of healthcare and personal care by utilizing them.
