Kao and Costco test foldable containers

Kao and Costco Wholesale Japan have introduced folding containers that can be used repeatedly as product packing materials on a trial basis at the Costco Kawasaki warehouse from July 19th. We plan to use about 1,500 bales per month.

In addition, this initiative is the first to be embodied by the system "01KAO", which started in July 2021 for all Kao Group employees, soliciting ideas from each employee and realizing commercialization and internal structural reforms. commercialization project.

In recent years, as companies have become more active in environmentally friendly initiatives, the Kao Group has enhanced the Yoki-Monozukuri philosophy cultivated through its corporate activities to Yoki-Monozukuri from an ESG perspective. We are strengthening our efforts to consider the environment and society.

Also, at Costco, based on the recognition that global prosperity is necessary at the same time as business growth, "SUSTAINABLITY COMMITMENT" is disseminated. We are actively developing business activities that incorporate the perspective of sustainability, such as reducing food waste, recycling, and reducing the amount of plastic used.

Under these circumstances, recyclable corrugated cardboard has been mainly used for packaging materials used to package products when delivering products to retailers. There was also the issue of emissions.

Therefore, this time, Kao and Costco will collaborate to introduce a reusable collapsible container on a trial basis, and start an initiative to collect and reuse it.

In addition, both companies conducted verification of the effects of folding containers in various situations such as "delivery", "display", and "sales", and extracted the advantages and problems of using folding containers. We will consider quality assurance in product transportation, ease of handling at manufacturing plants, confirmation of work efficiency at distribution bases, resolution of store issues, contribution to sales, and the mechanism of recycling-type folding containers.

Based on the verification results, we will first try to expand the number of stores that have introduced it, and in the future aim to standardize the recycling-type folding container throughout the industry.
