Creating a database of skin irritation test results using animal experiment alternatives With a grant from the Japan Animal Experiment Alternatives Society, the six companies continue to work together to contribute to the cosmetics industry.

Rohto Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., together with Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Sunstar Co., Ltd., Nippon Colmar Co., Ltd., and Mandam Co., Ltd. Below, a total of 6 companies are focusing on skin irritation, which is one of the safety evaluation items, and are working to expand data on alternative methods for animal experiments and enhance test conditions.

Currently, safety tests using animal experiment alternatives are being used more and more in the cosmetics industry, but the information published by papers and public institutions is limited. Furthermore, there is little information on the ingredients of quasi-drugs and cosmetics, and each company independently acquires and owns it.

Similarly, the OECD TG439 contained in the "Guidance on the Skin Irritation Evaluation System in the Safety Evaluation of Quasi-drugs / Cosmetics" issued by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare on April 22, last year can be used as a raw material for cosmetics. There is still little information available, and it was necessary to expand the test data and enhance the test conditions in order to promote its use as a safety test.

Therefore, six companies jointly conducted a test of 16 ingredients commonly used in cosmetics using the reconstructed 3D human skin model EPI-MODEL24 of Japan Tissue Engineering Co., Ltd. By testing and verifying with multiple companies, we were able to obtain reliable, usable and useful data for each company in the cosmetics industry.
