Acne Severity Related to Mediterranean Dietary Adherence

The Mediterranean diet is based on virgin olive oil and nuts, which are rich in anti-inflammatory polyphenols. The purpose of this study was to assess the association between Mediterranean dietary adherence and facial acne severity in French women. A case-control observational study of 40 women with mild to severe acne and 40 control subjects was conducted at Nantes Hospital in France. Compliance with the Mediterranean diet was evaluated based on the PREvención con DIeta MEDite rránean questionnaire. A global assessment by a trained dermatologist was also performed using the acne severity score.

As a result, the global linear model showed a significant negative correlation between acne severity and adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Researchers say they have confirmed the importance of using a holistic approach to acne management.
