Omega 3 fatty acid supplement does not suppress dry eye even with long-term intake

 To investigate the effect of 1 g of omega 3 fatty acid supplement per day in 23,523 American adults (male over 50 and female over 55) without severe dry eye symptoms. Subject enrollment was performed from November 2011 to March 2014, treatment and follow-up ended December 31, 2017, with a median follow-up of 5.3 years.


As a result, the incidence of dry eye was not different from that of the omega 3 fatty acid group (2.0%) and the placebo group (2.0%) (hazard ratio 0.97). There was no difference in the incidence of secondary composite endpoints for dry eye diagnosis and the occurrence of severe dry eye symptoms, with 8.9% in the omega 3 fatty acid group and 9.1% in the placebo group (hazard ratio 0.97).
