Beware of formaldehyde containing eyelash adhesive

The popularity of eyelash extensions has increased dramatically. For eyelash extensions, commercial products containing adhesives and proprietary professional adhesives are used. It has been pointed out that neither eyelash extension adhesive can release formaldehyde, which is a carcinogen and can cause allergic contact dermatitis, even though it is not specified as an ingredient.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate eyelash adhesives by measuring formaldehyde using the chromotropic acid method. Purchased 17 types of commercially available eyelash adhesives and 20 types of professional eyelash adhesives. A total of 37 eyelash adhesives were analyzed by the chromotropic acid method.

As a result, as for the commercially available eyelash adhesives, two types of adhesives with formaldehyde specified and two types of adhesives without formaldehyde specified were positive by the chromotropic acid method. Of the 20 professional eyelash adhesives, 15 (75.0%) were positive. It was suggested that eyelash adhesive users and clinicians should be aware that both commercial and professional eyelash adhesives can be a source of formaldehyde.
