Albion contributes to the community through winemaking

Albion established a research institute and a pilot farm in 2010 with the cooperation of Fujisato Town, Akita Prefecture, at the foot of the Shirakami Mountains, a World Natural Heritage Site. In 2012, we started purchasing Yama Sobinion from Fujisato Town, and started studying grape-derived cosmetic ingredients. In 2015, we started consulting with Fujisato Town about viticulture and development of cosmetic ingredients, and in 2018 we took over the vines from a vine farmer who was out of business due to old age and started cultivating vines for research on cosmetic ingredients. In 2021, as one of the facilities of the institute, "ALBION Shirakami Vineyard & Winery" was opened to carry out the production of in-house cultivated plant extracts, extraction technology research, and fermentation technology research.

Including cultivation technology research, we conducted various extraction research including the company's original subcritical dimethyl ether extraction, which is the world's first, and extracted extracts from seeds, peels, and fruit stalks, and made wine from residual fruit juice in the brewing process. We are conducting research on fermentation technology.

The availability of extraction research has made it possible to carry out consistent research from plant cultivation to product formulation, maximizing further uniqueness and efficacy. In addition, fermentation research developed from winemaking technology has made it possible to develop highly novel raw materials.

Albion is currently cultivating grapes on a land of 22,763 m2 around the institute, and its varieties have been expanded to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in addition to Yama Sobinion, and a total of three types of research are being conducted. Since the brewing of "Shirakami Mountains Wine" planned by Fujisato Town was entrusted this time, "Shirakami Mountains Wine" has been revived for the first time in four years and will be renewed and released from June 1st.
