Lion shortens development period by 20% by introducing automation technology for fragrance development

 Lion jointly developed with Yanagia an automatic blending robot that mixes fragrances with high accuracy, in a short time, and fully automatically, and introduced it to the development of fragrances for toothpaste. By utilizing this technology in combination with the "Expert Thinking AI" already developed by Lion (AI that has learned the knowledge of veteran researchers, past fragrance prescriptions and characteristic data of about 500 types of fragrance raw materials), It is expected that the fragrance development time for Hamigaki will be reduced by up to about 20%, speeding up the development.

Lion considers that the flavor of toothpaste is an important factor in daily toothpaste, and develops fragrances unique to the company by taking the lead in examining the fragrances to be blended. On the other hand, fragrance development requires a huge amount of study time, and there is an urgent need to improve the accuracy of study and speed up development.

The fragrance development of Hamigaki is "basic skeleton development" that sets a rough combination and blending amount from hundreds of fragrance raw materials according to product features and consumer tastes, and "optimization" that adjusts to the flavor aiming at the skeleton. It consists of two major steps.

In "Basic skeleton development", we are trying to speed up by utilizing "Expert Thinking AI", but since the difference in perfume raw materials by 0.001 grams affects the impression of flavor, we will consider the combination and blending amount. "Fragrance preparation" was a research task with a heavy burden common to both processes.

Especially in "optimization", we worked on improving the efficiency of fragrance preparation because it is necessary to consider delicate and high weighing accuracy and enormous combination for the final adjustment of fragrance.

The automatic compounding robot can perform the compounding of fragrance raw materials fully automatically with an error accuracy of 0.001 grams. Furthermore, by making it smaller than the ready-made products, it will be possible to study on a laboratory scale. For the refinement of this weighing, the knowledge of food processing machines possessed by Yanagia was utilized.

With the introduction of this technology, it has become possible to quickly propose various fragrance combinations that meet the needs of consumers. Furthermore, by utilizing it in combination with the "Expert Thinking AI" of toothpaste fragrance development developed in advance by Lion, it is possible to reduce up to about 20% of the conventional development work time in the entire toothpaste fragrance development.
