ALBION develops cosmetic ingredients that have both sensitivity and efficacy

Albion has signed a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Tokyo University of Agriculture since 2013, and jointly established the "Sri Lanka Traditional Plant Research Institute" in 2014. We identified the characteristic scent components of "Basil" and discovered that these scent components have a high antioxidant effect.

The results of this research were announced at the "65th Debate on Fragrances, Terpenes and Essential Oil Chemistry (TEAC)" (October 30-31, 2021).

Aroma is one of the important constituents in cosmetics, and is included in many items such as skin care and makeup products. It contains various scent components such as floral, citrus, woody and fruity, which stimulates our "sensitivity" and enriches our daily lives. In addition, you can expect psychological effects such as relaxing and concentrating by smelling the scent.

The company has been conducting research from both sides, paying attention to the "efficacy" brought about by "fragrance" in order to achieve both comfort and high skin effect. And as a plant that has both of them, we focused on Holy Basil cultivated at the Sri Lanka Traditional Botanical Research Institute.

Holy Basil is a sacred plant called "the elixir of immortality" in Ayurveda, one of the world's three major traditional medicines. It is said to bring about an effect.

As research progressed, it became clear that holy basil is composed of a spicy scent, a faint sweetness, and a green scent as a skeleton. Has turned out to be completely different. In addition, spicy scent components (eugenol, rotundone), sweet scent components (3-hydroxy-4,5-dimethyl-2 (5H) -furanone, coumarin, vanillin) and green scents form the scent of holy basil. Ingredients (3-isopropyl-2-methoxypyrazine, 3-methyl-2, 4-nonanedione) were identified.

Next, when the antioxidant activity of the scent component of holy basil was compared with that of sweet basil, it showed a strong antioxidant activity of about 4 times that of sweet basil. This antioxidant effect was largely related to the spicy scent component (eugenol), which is important in constructing the scent of holy basil.

Furthermore, it has become clear that the scent component of Holy Basil contains new components that have not been clarified so far, and these components may also have a high antioxidant effect. We will proceed with further detailed analysis with the aim of identifying new scent components and elucidating their effects.

Based on the results of this research, we will proceed with research on scent components that appeal to "sensitivity", and further develop raw materials with excellent skin effects, which will lead to product development.
