Received the 2020 "Cellulose Society Technology Award" for the development of cellulose acetate true sphere fine particles for cosmetics

Daicel Co., Ltd. has developed spherical fine particles made by processing environment-friendly cellulose acetate using our unique technology, and launched "BELLOCEA®" as a sustainable material for cosmetics in December 2020.

The research achievements of this technological development have been highly evaluated by the Cellulology Society, and we have received the "2020 Cellulose Society Technology Award".

Background and outline of research

・ Marine pollution problem caused by microplastic particles containing cosmetics

Microplastic particles such as nylon particles and acrylic particles are used in cosmetics such as foundations. These microplastic particles flow into the sewer when removing makeup, and flow directly into the sea without being captured by the sewage treatment, leading to marine pollution. For this reason, there are currently bans on the production of cosmetics containing microplastic particles in China, and restrictions on the use of microplastic particles in the United States and Europe.

・ Naturally-derived biodegradable cellulose acetate spherical fine particles "BELLOCEA®"

A solution to the problem of marine pollution caused by microplastics is "BELLOCEA®", which is a naturally-derived biodegradable cellulose acetate spherical fine particle. Cellulose acetate is a naturally derived, environmentally friendly material that uses "cellulose" present in wood and "acetic acid", which is the main component of vinegar, as the main raw materials, and has high biodegradability especially in seawater.

Microplastic particles that have been used in cosmetics so far have been characterized by being spherical and spreading well on the skin, but making an environmentally friendly alternative material spherical was a major technical issue. Therefore, we proceeded with our own research and development and established a technology to produce cellulose acetate fine particles that are spherical and have a relatively uniform particle size. "BELLOCEA®" produced by this technology can achieve a feeling of use equal to or better than that of conventional microplastic true sphere particles.

"BELLO CEA®" is a sustainable material and is a cosmetic ingredient that can achieve a soft touch and good stretch. In addition, it can be expected to raise the level of SPF (Sun Protect Factor), which shows the effect of preventing inflammation caused by UVB (medium wave ultraviolet rays). You can reduce the burden on your skin.

In the future, at WELLMETHOD (https://wellmethod.jp), a healthcare brand for women operated by our company.

We are planning to develop and launch a UV care product containing "BELLOCEA®", which will contribute to the reduction of microplastic particles.
