Nippon Paper Industries aims for cosmetics market

Paper manufacturers are rushing to develop applications for the new wood-derived material "cellulose nanofiber (CNF)," which is both light and durable. Nippon Paper Industries will develop cosmetics using CNF as a raw material and enter the market through its subsidiaries. Oji Holdings (HD) aims to replace glass windows. Each company wants to grow CNF, which can utilize the know-how cultivated in the paper manufacturing business and Japan's abundant timber resources, as a new pillar of management to compensate for the decrease in profits due to the decrease in paper demand.

CNF is a functional material that unravels wood fibers to the nano (1 nano is one billionth) meter level. In addition to its lightness and toughness, it is also called a "dream material" because it is derived from wood and has many features such as low carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions during manufacturing. It has already been used in cosmetics and foods to enhance the moisturizing effect and texture, and since it also has the effect of storing electricity, research on its application to storage batteries is progressing.

Nippon Paper Industries launched a new brand of skin care cosmetics, "BIOFEAT.", Through its subsidiary Nippon Paper Papylia (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), and launched four products such as cosmetics and washing pigments using CNF as raw materials on the 15th. Sell from. FANCL cooperates in commercialization and production. By appealing that CNF has excellent water retention and environmental friendliness, it aims for sales of 500 million yen in 2025 (Reiwa 7).

Nippon Paper Industries also started developing high-performance storage batteries that do not require rare metals with Tohoku University from this year. In addition to the world's largest mass production equipment at the Ishinomaki Plant (Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture), the equipment for making sample products of reinforced resin mixed with CNF was expanded at the Fuji Plant (Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture) in July. By entering the cosmetics market this time, we will foster businesses other than paper and expand CNF production.

Other major paper manufacturers will also focus on developing applications for CNF. Oji HD is rushing to develop a new material that mixes CNF with transparent polycarbonate resin. It is said that it can secure rigidity close to that of glass and can be reduced in weight, and aims to be adopted in electric vehicles (EV) and drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) by 30 years. Chuetsu Pulp & Paper has adopted CNF for the soles of sneakers released in June. It is said that kneading into rubber can reduce the wear of the sole by about 40%.

According to the research company Yano Research Institute, the shipping value of CNF (worldwide) is expected to be 5,375 million yen in 21 years. At present, it is mainly used as an additive, and not so many. However, it is expected to grow to 25.8 billion yen in 30 years, and further market expansion can be expected if it is mixed with resin and replaced with petroleum-derived resin, or if its adoption is expanded to automobile parts that are used in large quantities.
