Okayama University: Clinical trials prove early effects of cosmetic therapy for patients with dementia

"Medical Tribune", a medical newsletter, was published in an article dated September 16 about the early effects of cosmetic therapy by Okayama University on patients with dementia.

This clinical trial was conducted by a research group consisting of Professor Koji Abe of Okayama University Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Assistant Professor Ryuta Morihara of Okayama University Hospital, and Dr. Isao Tadokoro. It was carried out jointly with the representative directors.

As a result of the study, in a clinical trial in dementia patients, it was proved that cosmetic therapy has an effect of improving the emotional function of dementia patients immediately after the start.

According to the research group, 36 female dementia patients in the facility were divided into a cosmetic therapy group (19 patients) and a control group (17 patients), and a clinical study was conducted to verify the effect of cosmetic therapy. Thing.

Focusing on the early effects immediately after the start of makeup, the emotional symptoms (BPSD) score of dementia (Abe-style BPSD score) was significantly improved immediately after makeup in the makeup therapy group.

Furthermore, facial analysis using AI showed that the cosmetic therapy group rejuvenated the apparent age, and that the joy was increased especially in patients with moderate ADL disorder (activity of daily living).

Cosmetic therapy has attracted attention as a non-pharmacological therapy for dementia, but the medical basis for demonstrating its effectiveness has been insufficient.

Regarding this result, the research group said, "It is expected that this study will scientifically show the effectiveness of cosmetic therapy for patients with dementia, which will lead to the spread of cosmetic therapy." He talked about the significance.

These research results were presented at the 2nd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Cosmetic Therapy on February 6, 2021.
