Dai Nippon Printing proposes "paper packaging material" to realize a carbon-free society

Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) provides three values, "recycling of resources," "reduction of CO2," and "conservation of the natural environment," toward the realization of a carbon-free society, a sound-cycle society, and a society that coexists with nature. We are developing "GREEN PACKAGING", an environmentally friendly packaging.

In particular, with the aim of realizing a carbon-free society, we have set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG: Greenhouse Gas) emissions from business activities at our bases to virtually zero by 2050, and through products and services. We are working to reduce GHG emissions.

At home and abroad, the idea of considering the global environment and aiming to realize a carbon-free society is spreading in connection with the economic recovery from the corona disaster, and the movement toward carbon neutrality to reduce GHG emissions to virtually zero is accelerating.

The "Plastic Resource Recycling Strategy" formulated by the Japanese government in May 2019 is based on the basic principle of "3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) + Renewable", aiming for maximum use of biomass plastics, and about 200 by 2030. The goal of introducing 10,000 tons is also set.

In response to these movements, GREEN PACKAGING's initiative is to use "plant-derived packaging materials" that reduce petroleum-derived plastics and CO2 by using by-products (waste sugar honey) from sugar milling from sugar cane as part of the raw material. We are promoting the reduction of environmental load by developing and providing "paper packaging materials" that reduce the amount of plastic used by using paper, which is a renewable resource.

Among them, for paper packaging materials, compared to glass bottles and plastic containers and packaging of the same weight, the recycling consignment fee (recycling consignment cost) borne by the user is reduced, and the transportation cost is good due to the good loading efficiency. Inquiries are increasing due to the advantages of reduction and reduction of material storage space.

Currently, the lineup of paper packaging materials includes "DNP long-life liquid paper container" that standardizes the combination of plant-derived biomass plastic, biomass ink, and forest certified paper, and "DNP" that uses paper for the body of the tube. We are proposing "Laminate tube paper specifications" and "DNP Super High Barrier Paper Packaging Material", which has a high barrier property and can be marked with paper.

The liquid paper container for DNP long life is a paper container that has a high barrier property by utilizing paper, which is a renewable resource, and can be stored for a long time at room temperature. It can be used in a wide range of applications, including toiletry products and non-food fields such as chemicals and pesticides.

DNP laminated tube paper specifications have improved usability by making it easier to squeeze out the contents to the end by differentiating the appearance by taking advantage of the warmth and natural feeling of the paper and the shape retention of the paper. Furthermore, by using biomass polyethylene in addition to using paper, it is possible to replace about 75% of the total, excluding caps, with plant-derived materials.

DNP Super High Barrier Paper Packaging Material boasts a high barrier property against oxygen and water vapor at the same level as aluminum-deposited PET film, even though it has a two-layer structure consisting of paper and sealant, using the company's unique high conversion technology, and can also be used as a primary packaging material. It is said that it can be used.

It has been confirmed that by switching from the 3-layer film package, the amount of plastic used can be reduced by about 50%, and the amount of CO2 emissions in LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) can also be reduced by about 20 to 35%.

"Companies are required to manage ESG in consideration, and the importance of environmental perspectives such as responding to climate change and building a sound material-cycle society is increasing toward the realization of a sustainable society. In recognition of its value in contributing to the realization of a sustainable society, we received the ESG investment category (SDGs category) of the Tokyo Financial Awards 2020 sponsored by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. As one of the efforts to visualize the degree of contribution, we are promoting the visualization of the environmental load reduction effect by LCA. In 2020, even though the demand for some products is declining due to the impact of the corona disaster, we will realize a CO2 reduction more than the previous year. From this year, we also calculated the amount of CO2 reduction for products using biomass ink, and the cumulative reduction from FY2018, when statistics were started, is more than 8800 tons. These figures are very important evidence for ESG management. , GREEN PACKAGING will support ESG management of client companies from the aspect of packaging. "
