Kao Conducts Demonstration Test on Used Diaper Carbonization Recycling System

Starting in January 2021, Kao and Kyoto University will work together with Saijo City in Ehime Prefecture to conduct demonstration experiments aimed at establishing a "carbonized recycling system for used disposable diapers." We aim to establish the technology and implement it in society after 2025.

Currently, more than 2 million tons of used paper diapers are incinerated as waste annually, accounting for 4-6% of combustible waste. It has become.

In the future, it is expected that the amount of garbage will increase as the use of adult disposable diapers increases due to the aging population, and the impact on the environment will become even greater.

Under these circumstances, the company has been promoting "development of carbonization equipment for used disposable diapers", "conversion of carbonized used disposable diapers to carbon materials", and "social implementation of recycling systems".

Regarding the "carbonization device", the one developed by Kao will be installed at a nursery school in Saijo City in November 2021, and will start operating in December. We are collecting processing data from used disposable diapers and studying ways to improve their performance. With this carbonization device, we were able to reduce the volume of used paper diapers to about one-twentieth, so we will proceed with the development of the second unit, aiming for more energy-saving operation and shorter processing times.

For conversion to carbon materials, high-quality semi-carbonized materials obtained from carbonization equipment are used as samples, and highly recycled materials such as tire fillers and electronic materials, water retention and soil modifiers, plants Research is underway with the aim of developing activated carbon that can be used for cultivation and sewage treatment.

In order to implement the recycling system in society, we are studying infrastructure such as carbonization equipment installation sites and collection methods. This initiative contributes to "zero waste" and "decarbonization" among the key themes of the Kao Group's ESG strategy "Kirei Lifestyle Plan". We will further promote efforts toward the realization of a prosperous symbiotic world.
