Kao adopts chemically recycled PET material

As part of its efforts to realize a plastic recycling society, Kao will use chemically recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) material manufactured by PET Refine Technology, a group company of JEPLAN, for cosmetic bottle containers. From June, we plan to gradually introduce bottles from the cosmetics brand "TWANY".

Quality assurance and stable supply are necessary to adopt recycled plastics as packaging containers. The chemically recycled PET used by Kao for its cosmetic bottle containers was developed using JEPK's chemical recycling technology (using chemical decomposition to convert used resources into raw materials for PET resin for reuse). Recycled PET materials manufactured with this technology have been highly evaluated for their quality, including being approved as food containers by the Food Safety Commission of the Cabinet Office. In addition, it is possible to recycle cosmetic containers that are colored or decorated, or that contain agents, into PET materials that have the same quality as virgin PET. By making it possible to recycle used PET materials in all categories, including cosmetic containers, we can expect a stable supply of recycled materials.

Kao is gradually expanding the use of bottle containers that use chemically recycled PET materials in order to realize horizontal recycling of used containers into cosmetic PET bottle containers. We will promote efforts to collect and reuse used containers.
