Transient harmful effects of smoking on the eyes

Results of examining the immediate or short-term effects of smoking on the eyes.

This study evaluated the tear film, pupil size, and eye adjustment ability within 5 minutes of smoking in 45 habitual smokers of cigarettes. For the analysis of the tear film, three measured values of tear film destruction time, tear oil layer thickness, and tear meniscus height were used.

As a result, the tear layer destruction time was evaluated by all three evaluation methods, and the degree of decrease was statistically significant (P <0.001). A decrease in reservoir thickness was observed in the two evaluation methods used and was statistically significant (P <0.01). Significant reductions in pupil size (P <0.01) and accommodation (P <0.001) were observed after smoking cigarettes. Differences in tear meniscus height and depth of focus curve before and after smoking were not statistically significant (P> 0.05). These results indicate that smoking has an immediate adverse effect on tear film destruction time and accommodation of the eye, which is considered to be transient.
