Sojitsu participates in the development of biomass-derived monoethylene glycol (MEG) production technology

Sojitsu Corporation established a joint venture with Braskem SA (hereinafter referred to as "Braskem Braskem") on March 16, 2022 for the purpose of jointly developing production technology for biomass-derived monoethylene glycol and monopropylene glycol. The two companies have signed a contract to establish a total of three commercial plants, of which the first commercial plant is expected to make a final investment decision in 2023 and start operation in 2025.

Braskem, a leader in the commercial production of biochemicals, completed MEG production in 2020 in collaboration with Haldor Halder Topsoe Topsoe A / S, a leading engineering company with catalytic technology that plays an important role in the production of biomass-derived MEG. We are promoting the development of MEG production technology derived from biomass by utilizing the demo plant of. Sojitz will utilize the customer network it has cultivated to contribute to expanding sales of environment-friendly products that utilize biomass in a wide range of fields such as chemistry, food / beverages, and apparel.

MEG is widely used as a material for PET bottle containers for beverages and polyethylene terephthalate resin, which is a raw material for polyester fibers, and is generally produced from fossil raw materials. By establishing a joint venture with Braskem, Sojitz aims to realize MEG production derived from biomass instead of fossil raw materials, and also separates biomass conversion of isobutanol, which is a raw material for high-purity terephthalic acid, which is another main raw material for PET. We are promoting it and aim to realize 100% biomass-derived PET production by combining both projects. In addition, we will promote the plant-derived MPG used as a raw material for cosmetics through this matter in order to meet the needs of society, and contribute to the realization of a carbon-free society and a sustainable society.
