Mitsubishi Chemical and Toyota Tsusho consider commercialization of ethylene, propylene, etc. using plant-derived raw materials

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation and Toyota Tsusho Co., Ltd. have begun studying commercialization with the aim of starting production and sales of ethylene, propylene and its derivatives made from bioethanol as raw materials in 2025.

There is a growing need for plastic reuse and recycling toward the realization of a sustainable sound material-cycle society. There are also strong expectations for the realization of a sustainable life cycle by using plant-derived materials.

Mitsubishi Chemical and Toyota Tsusho are working on the commercialization of various types of recycling, and are aiming to realize a sound material-cycle society by switching raw materials from fossil fuels to plant-derived materials.

In order to make a wide range of products, including packaging, containers, and sanitary products that are generally difficult to collect and recycle, more sustainable, ethylene, propylene, and ethylene, propylene, and other plant-derived materials are used. We have decided to start studying for the commercialization of the manufacture and sale of the derivative products.

The content will be a study to manufacture 100% plant-derived ethylene and its derivatives using bioethanol as a raw material, and to manufacture and sell the first plant-derived propylene and derivative products in Japan using the bioethylene as a raw material.

Mitsubishi Chemical and Toyota Tsusho will investigate the market needs of bioethylene, biopropylene and derivative products, and conduct a concrete feasibility assessment for commercialization in 2025. In addition, we will quantify the GHG reduction effect over the entire life cycle and promote efforts to reduce the environmental burden. We aim to contribute to the realization of a sustainable sound material-cycle society through the dissemination of bioethylene, biopropylene and its derivatives and the construction of supply chains.
