Investigate allergens contained in cosmetics for sensitive skin on the market

Existing epidemiological studies have shown that people with sensitive skin are more likely to develop skin allergies, but their relevance is unclear. In this study, we analyzed 88 cosmetics from international brands on the market with the aim of assessing the presence of allergens in facial skin products for sensitive skin. Allergens identified on the product label were listed and grouped.

As a result, fragrances were the most common allergens, followed by skin conditioning agents, surfactants and preservatives. The most used fragrances were linalool, benzyl alcohol, geraniol and citronellol. Overall, the majority of cosmetic formulations did not contain fragrance allergens, with 7% of the product. Other allergens were found in most products (95%). Many of these compounds were rare sensitizers, but due to the lack of research demonstrating the risks to people with sensitive skin, the findings should be interpreted with caution.
