Vegetable oil is a promising sustainable alternative to petrolatum

The results of a study examining vegetable oils as a sustainable alternative to petrolatum in skin care formulations were posted online on January 17th in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.

This study evaluates the occlusive performance of various vegetable oils used as skin softeners in skin care cosmetics through comparative analysis with the synthetic skin softener Vaseline. The study enrolled 80 healthy adult female volunteers before and after applying percutaneous transpiration (TEWL) on the participants' forearms, emollients at 15 minutes, 2 hours and 6 hours with petrolatum or vegetable oil. It was measured.

As a result, the sealing effect of vegetable oil on the skin was recognized. In comparison with petrolatum, vegetable oils did not show a high immediate skin sealing effect, but most vegetable oils showed skin sealing performance comparable to petrolatum when measured after 6 hours. It was concluded that vegetable oils can be used as a sustainable alternative to synthetic emollients and are promising replacements for petrolatum used in skin care formulations.
